Royal Academy of Military Sciences

The Royal Swedish Academy of Military Sciences is a royal academy, which means that His Majesty the King is its patron.

The Academy has approximately 400 members, each a specialist in their field. Together, the members constitute a resource with broad expertise in all disciplines related to security and defense policy.

Membership is based on personal and non-profit commitment. Many members make great contributions to the academy, but only a handful of members work with the academy on a daily basis. These are the ones who are officials or are in charge of the various departments. Some members perform other positions of trust such as being project managers, etc.

The Academy's organization consists of:

  • The Bureau,
  • The officials,
  • The committees, as well as
  • The departments.

Organization

To support the organization, there is an office.

The Presidium

The Academy is led by a presidium consisting of the governor, vice-governor, permanent secretary, treasurer and chairmen of the departments. The presidium meets once a month during spring and autumn.

The officials

The officers of the Academy are the Governor, the Vice Governor, the Permanent Secretary, the Vice Secretary, the Treasurer and the Editor. They shall be members of the Academy.

The President is elected by the academy for a term of two years. Re-election is possible for a maximum of two years.

The second governor and the treasurer are elected by the academy for a term of two years. Re-election is possible.

The permanent secretary is elected by the Academy for an indefinite period. The contract is drawn up by the Presidium.

The second secretary and editor are appointed by the board, which draws up agreements.

The committees

Within the academy there are a number of committees that prepare various issues, namely the Planning Committee, the Audit Committee, the Editorial Committee and the Finance Committee.

The departments

The Academy is divided into six departments, each representing different competencies within the defense. They are

  • Section I, Land Warfare Science
  • Section II, Naval War Science
  • Section III, Air Warfare Science
  • Section IV, Military Engineering Science
  • Section V, Other science of importance to national security and defense
  • Section VI, Security Policy Science

Each department has its own board and is responsible for its own meetings, symposia, excursions, etc.
