Fighting for life – a Ukrainian combat medic's story
Report from a seminar
Fight for life consists of two parts that together provide an unusually sharp and human insight into wartime Ukraine – through the eyes of healthcare. The first part analyzes and discusses the conditions of the war from a healthcare perspective, with insights that are also directly relevant to Swedish conditions and our own preparedness.
The second part of the book is combat medic Danylo Zamoiskyi's own story: a personal, first-hand account of the work of saving lives on a battlefield where healthcare is one of the enemy's targets and where the risk of being injured or killed is constantly present. Here, the reader encounters not only professional experiences and concrete situations, but also the social and psychological dimension of war - as well as the humor and language that emerge in a reality where everything is at stake.
Fight for life is a story with nerve and urgency. It provides an understanding of what resistance actually means – and why a functioning healthcare system, both civilian and military, is a foundation for credible defense capabilities.
The paper is part of the series of publications published by the academy's project SV-AR (Sweden in NATO and the EU – Deterrence and Resilience).
