A people-centered Total Defense
Academy member Anna Wieslander writes in the foreword:
For Sweden, the sharply deteriorating international situation has meant a fundamental shift in Swedish security policy. Since 7 March 2024, Sweden has been a member of the world's most powerful defense alliance, NATO. Together with 31 other countries in the West, Sweden's new task is to protect a billion people from the horrors of war through successful deterrence. Society's ability to come together and withstand stress is a central component of this, together with a strong military defense.
Anchoring the defense of the Swedish population based on the current international situation therefore has two dimensions. One is to do it at the same time as we strengthen and develop our tradition of total defense that encompasses both the military and the civilian. The other dimension is that the Swedish mentality and strategic tradition must radically change: from thinking nationally and limitedly to thinking collectively and far beyond Sweden's own borders.
