A radical overhaul needs to be made throughout the entire defense system, military and civilian.
The overall development in society, technology and our environment with more sophisticated attack methods has clearly shown in operational games, carried out by the Royal Swedish Academy of Military Sciences, that our country is on the verge of being defenseless.
Sweden today has no civil defense – cyberattacks knock out the electricity supply throughout the country, which causes most things to stop – telephone networks, mobile networks, payment systems, to name a few. People start to starve after a week when food stocks are depleted. The attacker's use of social media creates panic, distrust and despair.
If the attack turns into military operations, the qualified units within the army and navy will most likely be knocked out or ineffective.
But there are solutions. The Royal Swedish Academy of Military Sciences' study project Military Science in the 21st Century presents in this book a number of proposals that would significantly improve Sweden's defense capabilities.
