Background
The most influential theorist of modern warfare is undoubtedly Carl von Clausewitz. His thoughts still have a strong influence on military theory, as well as the organization and use of military means of force. At the same time, we are in a post-Clausewitzian era. Technology and society have developed to a significant degree. Actors who exercise armed violence are no longer limited to states, but now include a wide spectrum of non-state actors, driven by political, economic and religious motives, among other things. A paradigm shift has occurred in the way war is waged. Today's and tomorrow's "battlefields" are likely to look completely different than what was previously the case. Among other things, civilian means of warfare have been given greater scope and the boundary between what is military and what is not is difficult to distinguish.
This is the background to the academy's research and study projects “The Future Battlefield – Military Science in the 21st Century (KV21)”.
The study perspective is beyond 2030. The project is multi-year. The result will be based on the Academy's collective expertise and be independent of what different authorities are doing. The final result should be presented in 2017 and the aim is for the material to be used in various decision-making processes within the defence policy area.
