SES final report now published in book form
“SERiously – SWEDISH SAFETY POLICY IN TRAFFIC TIMES – Final report from the SES project”
Since 2018, the Academy of Military Sciences has been working in project form, involving all six departments of the academy, under the name "Security in tomorrow's Europe – Swedish perspective” (SES) has conducted extensive research and studies with the aim of clarifying and recommending how security and defense policy in the broad sense should be designed in the coming years. The project's final report was presented on May 31 at a seminar in the premises of the sister academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and also during Almedalen Week. The final report is now available in book form and has been sent to the academy's members and a selected number of other recipients.
The Russian attack on Ukraine on 24 February radically changed the conditions for this final report of the project. A rework became necessary, which somewhat delayed the publication. The Swedish and Finnish declaration of interest on 18 May for accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) meant a paradigm shift in Swedish security policy that also had to be discussed in the final report.
The considerations contained in this final report are largely based on the SES project's proposals based on the study results up to 24 February, and on the conclusions that have been drawn from the dramatic developments after 24 February, including the Swedish and Finnish NATO application on 18 May. The relevance of many of the proposals in the research and study results has been highlighted during the pandemic crisis and during the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, it is clear that there is much to learn from how the war against Ukraine has been waged by both attackers and defenders.
Projects Security policy in tomorrow's Europe – Swedish perspective has been financially supported by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, without whose contribution the work would not have been possible.
