How can we safeguard Swedish interests in this multipolar world with multi-domain battlefields?
The SMS project builds on the extensive work carried out within the SV-AR project (Sweden, Deterrence and Resilience) 2023-2025. The new project takes its starting point from the dramatically changed security policy situation that has characterized the period since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden's and Finland's NATO membership, and the accelerating global developments with increased uncertainty about the future of the transatlantic link.
SMS therefore focuses on European defense capabilities within and outside NATO in light of global developments, with particular attention to the Nordic-Baltic dimension and plurilateral forms of cooperation.

Academy of Military Sciences is an academy in the present, with the mission to promote science of importance to Sweden's security. By creating, collecting and disseminating knowledge, the Academy's members contribute and inspire increased knowledge and debate about the development of Sweden's defense and security policy. Sweden needs a broad knowledge among citizens, among decision-makers in companies and organizations, among politicians in municipalities and regions and among legislators in the government and parliament about our security policy situation and about the capabilities, resources and finances of civil and military defense. It is part of the Academy's mission to contribute to such a breadth of knowledge.

The Presidium of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences stands strongly behind the sovereignty of every nation, which includes the right to make its own security choices. It condemns the Russian war launched on the democratic state of Ukraine. It is an unprovoked attack which has been carried out in clear conflict with the principles of international law. Attacks on civilian population and hospitals are totally unacceptable and Russia has for a long time gravely condemned itself in the eyes of the world. The Russian war should cease immediately and the Russian military forces have to leave the territory of Ukraine without further delay.
