Mats Ström Brigadier General (ret). Has served as, among other things, brigade commander, regimental commander, logistics commander and in management positions at the Operational Command, at Headquarters and at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration. Has also served in international management positions within the framework of UN, NATO and EU peacekeeping operations. Served at US CENTCOM as head of the Swedish liaison office. Today, advisor and consultant with assignments in the business community.

Thomas EngevallTHOMAS ENGEVALL

Thomas Engevall is a rear admiral and reserve officer and has been a member of the academy since 2003.

He was Head of the Command Staff at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration between 2019 and 2022. Previously, he has been Head of Defence Logistics in the Swedish Armed Forces, Head of the implementation of the PRIO operational management system, CIO in the Swedish Armed Forces, Project Manager for the Visby Project at the Swedish Maritime Administration and Staff Engineer in the Coastal Fleet.

Engevall is a marine engineer and holds a Master of Science degree in Naval Architecture from Chalmers University of Technology. In addition to traditional military training, he has completed Naval Command
College (NCC) at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI and the Senior International Defence Management Course (SIDMC) at the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. He is an honorary member of the Royal Swedish Naval Academy and was its chairman from 2010-2014.

 

Chairman of Section I, Land Warfare Science

Jan MortbergJAN MÖRTBERG

Jan Mörtberg is a colonel and member of the academy since 1998. He was elected chairman of Department I in 2015.

He was appointed lieutenant in the Norrbotten Regiment in 1977, has been commander of the Norrbotten Regiment and head of department at the Swedish National Defence University. He has also been an expert at the Ministry of Defence's Secretariat for Long-Term Defence Planning. In addition to troop, teacher and staff service in the Armed Forces on a national basis, he has experience of international service in Sinai, Cyprus, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq-Kuwait.

Jan Mörtberg is chairman of the Army Museum's Friends Association, is permanent secretary of the Norrbottensakademien and a member of the leadership of the Swedish Freemasonry Order.

 

Chairman of Section II, Naval War Science

Lars-Olof Corneliusson LARS-OLOF CORNELIUSSON

Lars-Olof “Hibbe” Corneliusson is a Major General and reserve officer and a member of the academy since 2010. He belongs to Department II.

Corneliusson was the head of the Neutral Nations Monitoring Commission in Korea from 2019 to 2021. He has been Director Intelligence at the EU Military Staff in Brussels, Military Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and senior positions within the Military Intelligence and Security Service, MUST as Head of Operations and Head of the Intelligence Office. Prior to that, he served as an attaché in the USA, Canada and Mexico. He has also been active in Afghanistan and North Macedonia.

Corneliusson is also a member of the Royal Swedish Navy and is involved in the Sports Veterans Association as chairman. He has received, among other things, the US Legion of Merit (Degree of Officer), Medal for merits German Armed Forces, Korea Service Medal and Order of National Security Merit Cheonsu Medal, Korea.

 

Chairman of Section III, Air Warfare Science

Goran PetterssonMATS NILSSON

Mats Nilsson is a Lieutenant General and a member of the Academy since 2001. He belongs to Department III.

Mats Nilsson initially served as a pilot and test pilot. After holding various positions in units and in the central staff, he was appointed Inspector General of the Swedish Air Force in 2000. He has since held several management positions at the Headquarters and served as a unit head at the Ministry of Defence. Nilsson has also been a so-called “Senior Level Expert” at the European Defence Agency, EDA. After his retirement from the Armed Forces, he worked for several years as head of the court marshal's office at the Royal Court.

Mats Nilsson has been a board member of the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration and the Total Defence Research Institute (FOI).

 

Chairman of Section IV, Military Technical Science

Thomas EngevallJOHN STARFALK

John Stjernfalk is a Brigadier General and a member of the Academy since 2002. He was elected Chairman of Department IV in 2025

Stjernfalk serves in the Strategy Unit of the Swedish Defence Staff. He was Head of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration's Aerospace Operations from 2010 to 2013. He has been a military expert at the Ministry of Defence and served in KFOR as Head of J9. Previously, he has been project manager for aircraft 37 Viggen and JAS 39 Gripen.

Stjernfalk holds civil degrees from Linköping University of Technology (B.A. in Engineering) and Uppsala University (B.A. in Economics).

 

Chairman of Section V, Other Science of Importance to National Security and Defense

Bjorn KörlofLARS NYLÉN

Lars Nylén was elected to the Academy in 2006. He belongs to Section V and was elected Chair of the Section in 2026.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Uppsala University in 1974. His district service in Uppsala continued with police chief training and various police chief positions in Uppsala County. In 1996, he left his position as county police chief in Uppsala after being appointed national criminal chief. From 2004 to 2011, he was Director General and Head of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. He then worked with the judiciary's participation in international peace and security-promoting efforts at the Ministry of Justice.

In 1985 he completed the FBI's National Academy, Quantico VA USA, and subsequently received training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Central Planning Unit, England and the IAEA in New Mexico, USA. International assignments include participation in the international expert team for the development of Public Order Policing in South Africa in 1996-1999.

 

Chair of Section VI, Security Policy Science

Krister AndrénKRISTER ANDRÉN

Krister Andrén is a former senior engineer at the Swedish Defence Research Establishment (FOA) and subject advisor at the Ministry of Defence. He was elected to Department VI in 2001 and was elected its chairman in 2023. He has previously been a member of the Review Committee (GU) and vice chairman of Department VI.

Krister Andrén has a Master of Science in Engineering Physics and was employed as a research engineer/operations analyst at FOA after graduating from KTH in 1972. He worked as a defense analyst in various parts of the defense sector until his retirement in 2013. He was, among other things, defense advisor to the Swedish NATO delegation in Brussels (1997-2001), defense policy advisor to two commanders-in-chief (2001-2009) and advisor to the chairman of the EU Military Committee in Brussels (2009-2012).

Krister Andrén is a member of the board of the Swedish National Defence Association (AFF).
